Its very difficult to pin down which is the best walk in the Lake District but I’ll make a stab at it, in light of a recent day out it has to be Great Gable from Borrowdale.

The day in question had a miserable dawn with loads of cloud cover and no light whatsoever so I had a lie-in – that was a good start. A fun packed scramble down the ghyll, packed with slides, dives and a few great jumps Duration: Up to 3 hours Church Beck, Coniston.

We hiked up Great Gable from Honister Buttermere book, much quieter route than from Seathwaite it seemed.

It was a challenging hike at times but well worth it. The scenery along the way is terrific and it only gets better at the summit. The position of the peak in the Lake District gives 5/5(36). Summary: Great Gable is rated by most Lakeland walkers as one of the best mountains.

Quite rightly too for it is an awesome sight to behold. It is possibly the most painted and photographed of all the Lake District mountains for it sits spectacularly in a central position when looking to it from Wast Water. Summit of Green Gable, with Great Gable looming out of the mist Buttermere and Crummock Water again, with the High Stile Range on the left I have to surrender some of the height gained by descending steeply to Windy Gap, where the climb to Great Gable starts.

The Farmhouse is located between the villages of Lorton and Buttermere, each have a pub and restaurant, with more amenities in Keswick or Cockermouth. In addition to the great fell walking the area is ideal for both cycling and climbing. Shop 8 miles, pub and restaurant 4 miles.

It is a superb route but relatively easy and because of its ease is best reserved for descent. The steep scrambly path up beside Sour Milk Gill and onwards via Gillercombe makes a better outward route. Lakes WeekendGreat Gable from Buttermere, Sunday 5th May Reporter: Reporter Brian Beardsall Our day started with a very pleasant drive through the stunning scenery of the Honister Pass driving from Braithwaite to the start of the walk at Gatesgarth Farm car park.

The slopes of Great Gable fall towards Wasdale and Ennerdale but do not reach the valley floor in either case being cut off by supporting fells, and it has no foothold at all in Borrowdale. This does not concern it's admirers who point to the mountains finer features like the Napes crags and the famous needle.
